Did you make a New Year's Resolution to lose weight but didn't follow through?
Don't beat yourself up. Give yourself grace, time slips by fast, which is why every minute you put off fixing your body and health, you end up hating yourself and beating yourself up even more.
So just STOP!
It's time to get serious about yourself. Don't you want to be able to:
You won't be able to do any of those things if you are overweight and sick, with bad knees, chronic pain and inflammation, constant fatigue, diabetes...you get the picture.
Forget about those old weight loss tricks that used to work for you, because you are not the same person and time changes all our bodies. What can I say, it's Mother Nature. Years of taking your body for granted: you know, too much food, too much wine, too much partying, too little sleep -- has created the body you are in now, and what you really need instead of ANOTHER weight loss "diet" is facts.
That's right, facts. You need some basic, straight-up facts about how your body works and what it absolutely has to have to function. You (and God--of course) are the only ones in control over the condition and health of your body--it's not a random card that is handed to you. If you are overweight and are suffering from minor, inconvenient things like fatigue, stamina and no motivation, you are the only one responsible for the condition you are in -- which you can "un-do" at any time.
After coaching people for five years and really hearing what people are saying, I have found 5 things that were getting in the way of them losing weight:
Of the 5, 'Mindset' leads the list as the singlemost common factor in why you can't lose weight.
Think about it: our brains crave stability, predictability and comfort, and embarking on a journey to lose weight challenges all three of these things. We tend to think of food as entertainment instead of sustenance, so when we have to train our brains away from food that tastes yummy and gives us pleasure to food that, well, tastes just "ok" -- for some people that is a HUGE undertaking!
So, I'd like you to seriously consider this list if you're someone who is struggling with weight loss. There's a lot of health and wellness-based dogma out there that still insists that it all boils down to "calories-in-calories-out", and that "you just aren't exercising enough/hard enough", but it just isn't that simple. It's not black and white.
We all have bodies that are unique, so it isn't good science (or good logic for that matter) to claim there would be one single proven method that's going to work for everyone.
The takeaway is this: there's more that meets the eye when it comes to weight loss. Yes, if you're eating too much then you need to cut back, and if you aren't exercising then you ought to start. But, if after those things are in place after a few months and you're still struggling, it's time to dig deeper and enlist some help, whether it be from a personal trainer or from a health coach like me, to help you get to your goal.
