When your body is under stress, it goes into the fight-or-flight mode. It doesn't know the difference between a running late for work or a tiger chasing you down--it’s all the same. When your body goes into this stress-mode, your adrenal glands release a surge of the hormone cortisol. What is critical to realize is that when your body’s cortisol is high, it dominates over ALL your other hormones, so every single one takes a back seat. In laymen’s terms: if you are under a lot of stress, then cortisol is dominant, and testosterone is not.
Ahhhh....no wonder things aren’t “working”!
But, that's not the ONLY thing that's wrong.
If you are on statins or take Prevacid or any other acid-blocker, you'll want to read on too.
You see, those statins and acid-blockers are actually causing your trouble too.
Here’s the lowdown:
1: You Need Cholesterol To Make Hormones.
Statins were created to inhibit your body’s production of cholesterol. The thing is, we need cholesterol. Cholesterol is essential to so many functions, like making bile salts to break down fats, helping your brain in the creation of memory, and helping to regulate blood-sugar levels. But most importantly, your body needs cholesterol to make hormones--and testosterone is a hormone!!
Unfortunately, we live in an era of unnecessary cholesterol vilification, and the end result is bad news for your health. Why? Because statins are the #1 prescribed drug of all time and with the new screening guidelines, most of our population are now on these drugs, which lower cholesterol levels to ridiculously low levels (if your total cholesterol is below 160, you may "think" this is great, but what it really means is that your testosterone levels are....ZERO!). Not so good for romance.
2: You Need Stomach Acid To Make Hormones
Now how do acid blockers come into play in this scenario you ask? Well, basically the digestive system is designed to get us nutrients from our food, because we need food to survive, right? Our digestive system is equipped at all points from your mouth all the way down to your poop chamber to extract every nutrient it needs to “run” your body’s functions: breathing, beating, digesting, etc.
Stomach acid is a vital component of digestion in that your digestive system relies on the extremely low ph of that acid to flip certain hormone production switches on. If you “block” your body’s stomach acid production, your available stomach acid won’t be acidic enough, and therefore won’t be able to switch on any of those hormone production centers. Bear in mind that natural stomach acid production declines on its own after age 50, and markedly after age 65 (which is why so many seniors reach for those acid-blockers). No acid: no hormones = no testosterone.
3: There is too much stress in your life.
And then we get back the cortisol issue. We tend to take stress for granted in our over-stimulated, overworked, over-scheduled society. Unfortunately, our bodies are the same as they were a thousand years ago, and our bodies simply can’t handle all of the stresses we put on it.
Chances are, if you got these three things going on (and if you are still reading!), you have to make a few changes. You may be able to manage the first two, but sometimes there are "hidden" stressors like inflammation from infections and food sensitivities that you may know nothing about--and this is where you need a health detective to identify those sources of inflammation.
My job is to help you find those hidden stressors using functional lab testing, and to coach your body back into balance using diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction and supplementation.
The takeaway here is this: if you want to get your groove back on you're going to have to examine those parts of your life that are causing you stress -- and fix it!
